Dental Bridges in Calgary

Dental bridges refer to the gaps created by one or more missing teeth. Missing teeth can make a smile less attractive and hinder the ability to chew.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is recommended to patients when teeth are missing or if a gap is present. Gaps must be filled as they affect adjacent teeth causing them to loosen. A dental bridge most commonly consists of prosthetic teeth; these are referred to as pontics. Pontics are held in place by two abutments (dental crowns). The abutments use the teeth that surround the gap as an anchor to ensure prosthetic teeth are comfortably in place. The result is a beautiful, restored and functioning smile.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are three main types of dental bridges, these includes the following:

  • 1. Traditional bridges: Traditional bridges are most commonly worn by patient. Traditional bridges require crowns to anchor surrounding teeth, where a pontic is attached to the bridge in order to fill the gap. Traditional bridges are created using porcelain fused to metal or ceramic.
  • 2. Cantilever bridges: The usage of cantilever bridges occur when adjacent teeth are present on one side of the missing teeth. This is a less common occurrence and is not recommended as it can apply excessive force on surrounding teeth, causing damage.
  • 3. Implant-Supported Bridges: Similar to traditional dental bridges, implant-supported bridges are not supported by natural teeth that surround the gap, rather they are supported by dental implants.
