What Types of Braces Are Available?

If braces are the right solution, a patient will be prescribed an appliance specific to their needs. The braces may entail bands, wires or removable corrective appliances. The following is a list of the most common types of braces:

  • Metal Braces (also referred to as traditional braces).
  • Ceramic Braces.
  • Lingual Braces.
  • Self-Ligating Braces.
  • Invisalign (clear braces).

“Mini-braces” are quite smaller than traditional braces, this may be an option for some. Patients will discuss with their dentist to determine which is their best option. The dental professional will conduct a clinical exam, including X-Rays of the mouth and head. The treatment plan is based on the analysis of gathered information.

How Do Braces Work?

Overtime, braces straighten the teeth by applying continuous pressure. As the teeth slowly move in a specific direction, the bone changes as a result of the applied pressure. Braces consist of the following components:

  • Brackets
  • Orthodontics bands
  • Spacers
  • Arch wires
  • Ties
  • A buccal tube
  • Rubber bands
  • Springs
  • Elastics
  • Facebow headgear

How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?

The time required for braces is dependent on the person. The severity of the issue, the amount of room available, the distance the teeth must travel and the health of the teeth and overall mouth are all factors. On average, patients are required to wear braces for one to three years. Failing to follow instructions may result in longer treatment time.
